Japanese cuisine is one of the most curious in the world, and is currently at the forefront. Although many still think that their diet is exclusively based on rice, they have a great variety of dishes and foods , what happens is that in the West only sushi is known.

Japanese cuisine is based on rice, noodles, miso paste and fish, along with some local mushrooms and vegetables . All this, together with different dressings such as soy sauce, mirin or rice vinegar, serves to create exquisite dishes with unique flavors that only this island can provide.

As time goes by, more and more Japanese recipes reach different corners of the world, allowing more people to enjoy this wonderful cuisine without having to leave their own city. If you are going to visit Japan or are simply a lover of this cuisine, below you will discover the most typical dishes of this country that delight everyone who tries them:

  1. The most famous: Sushi
    This internationally known dish is made with a base of cooked rice, seaweed and decorated with different fish : salmon, butterfish, tuna, among others. And sometimes with vegetables or fish eggs.

There are many varieties of sushi, which change depending on the format or presentation:

Maki : It is the simplest and most common variety. They usually have a single ingredient surrounded by rice and wrapped in seaweed . Make a roll and cut it into very thick slices.
Niguiri : consists of an elongated piece of kneaded rice with a portion of seasoning placed on top , be it fish, shrimp or egg.
Oshi – Unlike the others, this one is made with the help of a wooden box, as the rice and seasonings are pressed in it.

  1. Takeaway: onigiri
    This popular and curious food consists of a triangle or ball made from rice, with a filling made from fish or roe . It is usually wrapped in nori seaweed to provide a salty flavor and to be able to eat it in a more practical way.

It is a very simple dish and is usually sold in supermarkets, restaurants and “Kómbini” in any neighborhood, since it is a very popular and economical snack.

  1. The little miso soup
    This is without a doubt one of the most traditional recipes in Japanese culture. It is used in almost all meals because it is served as an accompaniment.

These miso soups usually have pieces of tofu, leek, chives or wakame seaweed . In some versions, meat, potatoes or noodles are also added. It is so versatile that they use it for breakfast, dinner or lunch.

  1. The tasty Ramen
    Considered by many the king of noodle soups . There are infinite varieties of preparation, each one more delicious. It is such a popular dish in this country that there is even a museum dedicated to it where you can learn about its history and where you can also taste the best versions.
  2. To sweeten: Mochi
    To top off all these dishes, nothing better than something sweet and very traditional . To make it, the rice is pounded until it becomes a tame paste (the so-called glutinous rice). This pasta is molded and colored, and sometimes it is usually filled with different condiments or pastes. In just one bite you can taste all of Japan.
